Corey Early Alumni Highlight

February 2016

Tell me a little about yourself.

I’m 25 years old, born and raised in Philly.  I’m a genuine human being, a hard worker, and a go-getter.

When were you in PowerCorpsPHL?

I was in Cohort 3 on Mr. Pat’s crew, Water Inc.  Then in Cohort 4, I was the Assistant Crew Leader (ACL) for Mr. Carlos and the Nature Chasers.  I did Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Maintenance with Philadelphia Water Department for the first 6 months.  Then I made ACL for Mr. Carlos.  It was kind of tough because as ACL you have to deal with so many personalities.  But I made my crew work hard and showed leadership.  I learned to be more genuine and understanding.  I learned how to withstand more controversy.

What are you up to now?

I work full time for Wash Cycle Laundry.  Sometimes I’m on laundry team, sometimes I bike to deliver the laundry.  I prefer the laundry team because it’s more comfortable and I can listen to my music.  After PowerCorpsPHL I did a little construction work, I had a family connection.  I worked as a helper and learned a lot about construction.

What about in your free time?

I’ve been spending a lot of time with family: my mother, sister, uncles, cousins, and girlfriend.

What motivates you?

My background and my family make me want to do good.  The hard things from my background motivate me.  I’m just interested in working hard and staying out of trouble.

How did your time with PowerCorpsPHL impact you?

PowerCorpsPHL saved my life to be honest with you.  It kept money in my pocket and kept me occupied during the day.  But more than that, the people really care.  Before PowerCorpsPHL I was so closed off.  But it showed me how genuine I could be with others and that I could be a real people person.

Now that you’re an alumni, what sort of involvement would you like to have with PowerCorpsPHL?

I’d like to know about the events coming up, like the races and community clean-ups.  I would still like to be a part of servCorey workoutice events.

What do you miss about PowerCorpsPHL? What don’t you miss?

I miss the caring people and the hands on involvement they have in your life and with you.  I don’t miss dealing with everyone’s attitudes at one time as an ACL.

What do you hope to do in the future?

I wanna be a personal trainer.  I need to continue to work out and learn more about the human body & nutrition.
