LaTisha Alumni Highlight

March 2016

Tell me a little about yourself.

My name is LaTisha, my friends call me Tisha.  I’m 22 years old, I was born in Philadelphia.  I live in Southwest Philadelphia.  I’m pretty quiet, I’m low-key.  I’m a people person, I’m outgoing.

When were you in PowerCorpsPHL?

I was in Cohort 4 on Carlos Alvarez’s Philadelphia Parks & Recreation crew.

What are you up to now?

I’m currently a Specialist for Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Philadelphia LandCare.  I mainly do administrative work and data entry.  I enter information about the vacant lots in the LandCare project.  I also go out in the field to ensure the contractors are taking care of the City of Philadelphia owned vacant lot.  The contractors listen to me, they respect me and my position.

Before this, I was an intern on the PHS Tree Team.  I organized tree planting events, I assisted on the Philadelphia Housing Authority Blackwell tree planting project, and I did data entry and other administrative work.  I got that internship straight out of PowerCorpsPHL and I had it for three months before I began my seasonal position with PHS Philadelphia LandCare.  After PowerCorpsPHL, the transition to administrative work was nice.  It’s more to my interests.  PHS has a very friendly staff, and the work is flexible.  Working for a non profit is different.  PHS has a library of books about trees in the building! I took my daughter there.

What about in your free time?

I take daughter out on the weekends.  I like to link up with old PowerCorpsPHL friends, we stay in touch.

What motivates you?

My daughter motivates me.  It’s different when you’re living for somebody else. Everything you do reflects on that person. It’s hard as a single parent.  My priority is to make sure she’s taken care of.

How did your time with PowerCorpsPHL impact you?

PowerCorpsPHL boosted my resume so I am qualified for the position I have now.  I hadn’t heard of Pennsylvania Horticultural Society before PowerCorpsPHL, but it introduced me to PHS and my positions.  PowerCorpsPHL showed me that I’m capable of doing things I didn’t know I could.  Now I’m looking into pursuing education in horticulture because there are so many job opportunities.  It’s a field I was unfamiliar with, PowerCorpsPHL opened me up to new things.

Now that you’re an alumni, what sort of involvement would you like to have with PowerCorpsPHL?

I’d like to participate in events and sit on panels.  I would like to meet the new people who join the Cohort.

What do you miss about PowerCorpsPHL? What don’t you miss?

I miss my crew and Crew Leader.

I don’t miss the work or the training days/Pre Service Orientation.

What do you hope to do in the future?

I hope to stay with PHS and continue to climb up the ladder.  I want to walk away with a degree soon, I’m not sure exactly what yet.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Shout-out to my Crew Leader Carlos! When I came there, I wasn’t with it. He motivated me to keep going, that I had more potential in me. He got me to change my ways.
