Carlos Alvarez (Crew Leader)carlos-alvarez

Carlos was born and raised in El Salvador, where he lived until the age of 10. From there, he immigrated to Queens, New York, where he says he was influenced by many different cultures. Carlos says that the people and places he’s encountered have shaped him into the man he is today. We are excited to have Carlos on board and know that he is going to do a fantastic job with our newest crew!

“Leader and hard worker.”

Pedro, an alumni of Carlos’s cohort IV crew the Nature Chasers, returns to PowerCorpsPHL for Cohort V as an ACL. The thing that excites him most about PowerCorps is the chance to make a difference in the city he loves. His greatest influence is his father, who was a hard worker that did everything with his family in mind. Pedro’s proudest accomplishment is becoming an ACL. He worked very hard to get to this position. After PowerCorps, Pedro wants to be in a job that he loves.

What about PowerCorpsPHL most excites you?
“Everything about it–especially giving back to my community and the way the staff care about you.”
Abdullateef is an important, bright, hard-working Muslim man. He is proud of earning his high school diploma, and after PowerCorpsPHL would like to attend Finishing Trades Institute. His dad is a great influence on him because he motivates Abdullateef to be better than he was. Abdullateef’s son is also a great influence on him because he doesn’t want his son to go through the same things he went through, this inspires Abdullateef to do more and better for his son.

Who is the greatest influence on you?
“My grandmother and my support system.”

Bern is powerful, adventurous, artistic, and diverse. Her greatest accomplishment is working on set of her first feature film, “The Stream.” She plans to move to Los Angeles after she completes PowerCorpsPHL to build her photography and film-making business. She is an entrepreneur and hopes to expand her business into fashion design. Bern likes the fact PowerCorps has the ability to change lives, no matter who you are.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
“The accomplishment I am most proud of and put the most time and effort into was getting my diploma.”

Korey is a kind, straightforward thinker who conssiders himself cooperative and strategic. The thing that excites him most about PowerCorpsPHL is being present every day for something that is bigger than himself. The greatest influence on him is his mom. He feels that all he has done is take from her, and that PowerCorpsPHL has given him the opportunity to give back. Before Korey leaves PowerCorpsPHL, he would like to secure a good job working with whoever sees him as an asset to their business and establishment.

What do you want to do after PowerCorpsPHL? Or who would you like to be?
“I would like to work for the City.”

Dre is happy, caring, loyal, a hard worker, and a leader! His greatest influence is his mother. He recently earned his Commercial Drivers License permit, and would like to drive a commercial vehicle for the City. He is excited about PowerCorps because of the opportunities it has to offer.

“I am dedicated, straight-forward, and loyal.”

Shizz is most proud of getting into PowerCorpsPHL. After completing her term of service, she would like to be an entrepreneur–possibly in landscape! Shizz pushes herself forward. She enjoys learning about the environment with PowerCorpsPHL, especially about different plants and trees.

What about PowerCorpsPHL most excites you?
“I feel PowerCorpsPHL is a great organization that gives people an opportunity to succeed in life despite any hurdles.”

Mel is focused, goal-oriented, and ambitious. She is most proud accomplishment is when she represented Guinea at the UN in New York City and gave a speech about ways to combat the AIDS Crisis. Her grandmother, Theresea, is a great influence on Mel. Theresea’s hard work and dedication all her life inspires Mel to succeed. After PowerCorpsPHL, she wants to either work for PWD or go to school for commercial and residential electricity.

Who is the greatest influence on you?
“I would say my family is my greatest influence. My nephew is the one who keeps me motivated.”

Yani is self-motivated, determined, and unique. She is proud of joining PowerCorpsPHL and likes that it gives her the chance to give back to her community. She wants to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Yani would like to be a better role model to her family and the people around her. She’s excited to make a difference.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
“I’m proud of getting my high school diploma and my driver’s permit.”

Mox is quiet and humble. He enjoys the physical work of PowerCorpsPHL and would like to get a job with the City after he completes his term of service. His family is a great influence on him because of their support and encouragement to be self-motivated.

What do you want to do after PowerCorpsPHL? Or who would you like to be?
“I want to go back to school and finish up engineering technology. I would also like to work for UPS.”

Nas is a positive person, he connects well with people. He’s funny and smart, and loves playing sports. When he was 17, he and his basketball team won the State Championship! He is proud of the trophies and medals he was awarded. He is excited about serving with PowerCorpsPHL because he likes serving his community. His mother is a great influence on him because she has always been there, especially when he needed her the most.

What are some words that describe you?
“I’m out-spoken and I’m funny sometimes.”

Nova is proud that she is currently a student at City College. She likes learing new things with PowerCorpsPHL, like how to use tools. After PowerCorpsPHL, she would like to be a nurse in either the Army or the Navy. Her greatest influence is herself, because she has been through it all and got herself through. Her significant one has always been there to support Nova.
